The present research studies the formation process of work powerlessness among nurses of public hospitals in Yazd. 20 nurses from public hospitals of Yazd were selected through qualitative approach and grounded theory using theoretical and purposive sampling methods, and an in-depth interview was conducted on them. Theoretical sampling process was continued until the researcher reached data saturation. Data were analyzed using open, axial and selective coding, and the paradigm model and theoretical schema were presented in the form of storyline (including 20 main categories and 1 core category). The results showed that nurses’ work powerlessness is constructed due to factors such as doctors’ power-control discourse, financial dissatisfaction construction, and fluid status of patients. Nurses adopt different strategies for work powerlessness, among which we can refer to emotional labor, pragmatic treatment, and trust discourse. These strategies bring consequences like learned indifference, discursive conflict resolution, hegemony of negative emotions, and combined care styles. The theoretical schema illustrates this process.
