Abstract

Population and childbearing are among the most critical social issues in Iran today. The current research is a qualitative study that was conducted in 2022-23 in Yazd city with the aim of discovering and identifying the controlling and motivating factors for childbearing among citizens. In order to conduct this research and gather the participants' interpretations for theoretical analysis, the database theory (Charms' constructivist approach) was utilized as one of the qualitative and interpretive methods. The participants in this research included 25 citizens of Yazd, with whom semi-structured interviews were conducted. Subsequently, the data was coded to construct concepts. The results showed that for the participants, having children is interpreted as having two general meanings: meaningful implications and perceptions, as well as risk barriers. Sub-themes include having children as a way of overcoming future life challenges, giving meaning to life, children's gender preferences, parents' educational concerns, parents' worries about the rapid changes in the lifestyle of the younger generation, and viewing children as an economic burden. The results of the research showed that the intention to have children is influenced by social factors, which impact the mental beliefs of individuals. In addition, the desire to have children has encountered challenges and concerns, diminishing the subjects' motivation to the extent that it has overshadowed the motivating factors.
