Brain death and organ donation for donor families is a complex process that has resulted in unique lived experiences for these families. The aim of this study is to explore the lived experience of organ donor families. This study is a qualitative study of the transcendental phenomenological type, in which data from 17 semi-structured interviews that were purposefully and criteriously selected were coded and interpreted using the Moustakas analysis method. The collected data were analyzed under three main themes and ten subthemes. The main themes and subthemes are: decision-making limbo (internal family tensions, time pressure, hard decision, crossroads of reason and emotion, charismatic decision-maker), social feedback (stigmatization, positive feedback and internalized social rejection), inner satisfaction (gaining peace of mind, wish to be donated, belief in one's decision and happiness from donation). The results show that after hearing the news of brain death and the request for organ donation, donor families face family tensions and rational and emotional conflicts in making the decision to donate, and they find themselves in a liminal state. Organ donation has also had both positive and negative social feedback, which has sometimes caused them distress and sometimes pride. However, overall, the participants expressed happiness and inner satisfaction with the act they had performed.
